Come Dance with the Reaper

As everyone knows, the Reaper is a worldwide phenomenon,
so its only fitting his adventures seem to be achieving that same status too.

This past week has seen Hell Bound climb into the top 10 on different sides of the globe, proving once and for all, Daemon Grim has one killer of a story to share with you.
******
And don't forget the reviews:

The author of Hell Bound, Andrew P. Weston has an appealing way with words. He paints written words like a master.

For a book about hell, demons, and very bad things, this book was beautifully written. There were times when I would re-read a section just because it was so evocative.

Andrew Weston really knows how to write an enthralling book! His words really pulled me in and didn't let go. I hope to see more from him soon.

An excellent mix of film noir imagery with sophisticated writing that dares the reader to slow down, savor each word, and slowly become immersed in this very real depiction of our own reality and that which exists beyond the veil of death. A true example of writing that elevates the reader's own appreciation and expectation for the genre of urban fantasy.

Andrew Weston's luxurious prose keeps the dimensions spinning, and the underverse vividly delineated.
******
And of course, Hell Bound still dominates the Goodreads Charts, and holds the top spot in - amongst other things:

 Best Gothic Adventure
Great Fantasy and Science Fiction Reads
MythPunk
Ulta Gothic
Literary Underground
 Best Fantasy of 2015

Fanboy Comics - Review of Hell Bound

No rest for the wicked.

Such is the theme of Hell Bound, Andrew P. Weston’s newest addition to his growing collection of novels. The souls of Earth’s most vile and despicable humans are cast into Hell, rolled like dice into a sinister House where injustice is the high card and evil’s the royal flush. Their dealer: Daemon Grim, Satan’s very own pit boss . . . who just so happens to be the Grim Reaper. Imbued with supernatural powers and a list of the damned, Grim drags the very worst of humanity to Hell, where they spend eternity in various levels of pain and horror - and where they never seem to win the hand. Because, after all, eternal damnation isn’t meant to be fun.

Unless, of course, pain and horror is your fun. And, with players like these . . . you’re bound to find a sadist or two who revels in the opportunity to bet against the house and challenge the Grim Reaper to a game of wits with their very soul at stake. But, no one beats the House . . . until now.

As Weston effortlessly weaves together a surprisingly tangible and unexpectedly humorous vision of Hell as a grimy, rotting version of Earth’s London, we join Grim as he hunts down a soul who’s eluded his fate at the hands of The Undertaker. Grim and his enforcers, a trio of Hell Hounds, along with help from the Fiendish Bureau of Investigation and some fantastically named ladies, Bella and Donna Nightshade, make their way into the very bowels of Hell and discover that injustice and evil only feed upon each other. It turns out, inviting the very worst of humanity to sit at the same bar where they can hatch a plan to collectively take down the House probably wasn't the best idea His Infernal Satanic Majesty has ever had. But, of course . . . that’s what his Pit Boss, The Reaper, is for.

Ultimately, Weston’s novel is highly inventive and surprisingly enthralling. It’s a mob drama with a taste of the supernatural (and Weston’s signature love of all things involving the space time continuum). Despite the fact that these characters are genuinely unlikable individuals, I find myself intrigued by their stories. They’re fascinating looks into what evil might resemble if evil was allowed to flourish openly.

However, while I enjoyed the stories and found the characters supremely disgusting (exactly what you want when your characters are, quite literally, demons)...I found myself distracted by Grim’s tendency to talk to himself ...That being said, once you get used to the snappy dialogue and the way the characters think, the story falls into place.

Hell Bound is a vividly wrought story of evil at its best, and while it took me some time to get inside Grim’s head, the story was compelling and a fascinating venture into the world of unsequestered villainy. Now, admittedly, it was more of a cop/mystery story than I was expecting (and I typically stay away from mystery novels), so if that’s not up your alley, I suggest giving it a few chapters and seeing if the world is intriguing enough for you to continue exploring. For me, I had no problem diving further into the dredges of Hell, betting on Weston’s world building to win me the hand even when I was worried the cards weren’t in my favor.

And, for the record, I bet correctly.

The Heroes in Hell Shared Universe

As some of you already know, Heroes in Hell is a series of shared world fantasy books, within the genre Bangsian fantasy, created and edited by Janet Morris and written by her, Chris Morris, C. J. Cherryh and others. The first 12 books in the series were published by Baen Books between 1986 and 1989, and stories from the series include Hugo Award winners and Nebula nominees.
The series was resurrected in 2011 by Janet Morris with the thirteenth book and eighth anthology in the series, Lawyers in Hell, followed by five more anthologies and two novels between 2012 and 2015.

What’s the background?

The shared world premise of Heroes in Hell (also called The Damned Saga) is that all the dead wind up together in Hell, where they pick up where they left off when still alive. The Encyclopedia of Fantasy states "In the long series of shared world adventures begun with Heroes in Hell, Hell becomes an arena in which all the interesting and most despicable people in history can come together to continue the relentless pursuit of their various ends. As you can imagine, this sets the scene for limitless violent adventures, involving tales of morality, poignant consequences and frequent echoes of infernal comedy.

How does the concept work?

Very simply – and this will be a greatly simplified version – there are rules to follow. Various characters belong to certain authors who use them in their own stories regularly. I can refer to and even involve those other people in my own series (The Undertaker is a good example) but if I do, I can’t permanently alter his persona, style, nor do anything to him involving his longterm disposition. Place names are often set, and expect to see an antithesis on famous landmarks and locations. The Hexcalibur Hotel, for example, is a renowned institution in New Hell. Every hotel contains a Dante – as opposed to a bible – and there are many ingenious little ways in which an infernal slant is incorporated into various storylines. Well known institutions like the Fiendish Bureau of Investigation can be found too. Do you begin to see the converse parallel? Hell is a lot like the world the condemned soul left behind, but there’s enough of a difference through these subtle references to remind them (and the reader) that this is a menacing reality they now inhabit. However, that ominous undertone is often delivered with a tinge of dark humor.

So, accepting these constraints, an author nevertheless gets a great degree of freedom to develop their own storyline – and this as much of a challenge as it is great fun because each contributor has their own distinctive style. If you’re already connoisseur of the anthologies, (See list at the end of this article) you’ll know what I’m talking about.

In Hell Bound, my own character, Daemon Grim – the Reaper – is involved in the pursuit of a whole host of other individuals I devised, along with those who have been established for a long time. But how to juggle the developing plot so it fits with the overall theme?

Aha – you’ll need to see for yourself, and note what others have already recognized about this latest addition to an ever expanding playground in which you can lose yourself for hours.

And never forget

In hell, everyone can hear you scream.

High Praise for Hell Bound

Released only days ago, Hell bound is already creeping into the hearts and minds of readers everywhere. Just look at some of the comments made by early reviewers:
*************
The author of Hell Bound, Andrew P. Weston has an appealing way with words. He paints written word pictures like a master.
HELL BOUND is an exciting, uproarious, tour of the underverse in the company of the illustrious Daemon Grim, he who performs soul-reaping duties on behalf of His Satanic Majesty. When not out and about in the performance of his duties, Grim enjoys pleasant passionate interludes with the beauteous Inquisitor Strawberry Fields, and an animosity of eternal duration with Hellegal' s own much-feared Undertaker.
Andrew Weston' s luxurious prose keeps the dimensions spinning, and the underverse vividly delineated.

If this were not reason enough to delve into the despicable delights that the underworld has to offer, it may interest you to know that Hell Bound is already climbing the Goodreads charts as well, and has the distinction of appearing in the top five in more than fifteen different categories...
AND IS # 1 in five!
Incredible – and all thanks to you – my fantastic readers and supporters.
Thank you so much

Hell Bound
In hell, none of the condemned believes they deserve to be there. And that’s fine, so long as they’re not foolish enough to try and do anything about it. For those that do, there’s always Satan’s Reaper–and chief bounty hunter–Daemon Grim.
Feared throughout the many layers of the underverse, no one in their right mind dares to cross him. However, when Grim discovers that someone has attempted to evade injustice, and seems hell-bent on gaining access to ancient angelic artifacts proscribed since the time of the original rebellion in heaven, circumstances point to the fact they may be doing just that.
The question is...why?
Thus begins an investigation that leads Grim throughout the many contradictory and baffling levels of the underworld, where he unearths a conspiracy that is not only eating its way like a cancer through the highest echelons of Hellion society, but one which threatens the very stability of Satan’s rule.
As you can imagine, Grim’s response is bloody, brutal, and despicably wicked.

In hell – everyone can hear you scream.
